Queen's Jubilee Garden
Description
This garden was planted to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
Located adjacent the North Para River and around the Barossa Community Labyrinth, this garden is made up of several ‘islands’ of plantings, with walking paths allowing access for visitors and for ease of access for maintenance purposes.
Objectives
The objective of this garden is to increase biodiversity, food resources and habitat for declining woodland birds of the region. ‘Plant a tree for the Queens Jubilee’ funding criteria was to plant trees that would grow to a minimum of 2m. The BBG made plans to include understorey vegetation to support a functioning ecosystem at a later date.
Background
To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, the Barossa Bushgardens was successful in securing funding to plant a ‘forest’ of 500 plants that grow to at least two metres in height.
On 9 August 2022, The Barossa Council staff, Barossa Bushgardens volunteers and the Barossa Valley and District Garden Club came together to plant out the site adjacent the North Para and around the Labyrinth. The Governor of South Australia also joined the celebrations and planted a Eucalyptus odorata (Peppermint Box).
In 2025, during a community planting as part of World Environment Day, 400 understorey plants were added to create different layers of a functioning ecosystem.
