Dementia Friendly Community Garden

Stepping back in time with objects from yesteryear that ignite memories, conversation and sharing, this garden provides a safe space for people living with dementia, their carers and support workers. 

A cottage style garden with few small trees and shrubs. Plantings are mainly annual flowering plants as well as grasses and climbers. This garden is surrounded by old fencing, has a shelter and wheelchair-friendly table setting as well as farming artifacts.

• The garden provides opportunity to step back in time and find objects from yesteryear that ignite memories, conversation and sharing. 

• Creating opportunities for a family member living with dementia to engage and share with family again as they remember how they used to tend their own gardens. 

Opened in 2018, the Dementia Friendly Community Garden has been designed because of a ‘Dementia Friendly Communities’ Audit. All aspects of the garden, including objects, plants, walking paths and activities have been carefully selected to create a garden that feels welcoming and safe to a person living with dementia.
